More about the Trainer
Philip
Tory
Hello again. Here is a bit more about my background.
I am a scientific and technical person, well experienced
in many branches of industry. I also have a business
background in development, marketing, sales, QA
and Training.
For many years, I worked for other companies in
various roles, also producing their Technical
Manuals and Online Help Guides.
I studied and researched Technical Writing extensively,
and put it into practice. I would ask the end
readers for their feedback, which was positive and
most useful, because they gave me new ideas for improving
documentation.
In 2000, I started my own Technical Authoring business,
and formed Authorgraphic Ltd in 2002. Since then,
I have helped hundreds of people like you to improve
their writing. I have run this course in UK, across
Europe, in India and the USA.
My speciality is good clear manuals and help guides.
You can learn these skills too. I aim to inspire writers
and their end readers, bringing new ideas to light.
My Career:
Technically, I am well qualified. I studied Applied
Physics, Electronics and Control Engineering to
Masters level. I also have a Management Diploma
from Open University.
I began my working life as an electronics development
engineer, designing a variety of electronic and
electromechanical equipment. In different companies,
I took products from concept to production, and
designed automatic test equipment for final QA.
I have worked on various projects such as the Concorde
flight computers, medical electronics, car park
control systems, and fly-by-wire systems for fighter
aircraft. For two years, I managed a technical drawing
office.
I then moved on to technical sales, and broadened
my experience to include Marketing, Franchise Management,
Installation, Technical Support and Training. All
roles included documentation of the company's products.
Before starting my own Technical Authoring business
in 2000, I was a Software QA and Product Manager
for three years which, again, included responsibility
for all product documentation.
In these various situations, I have written technical
documentation covering:
- User Manuals
- Installation Guides
- Software Upgrade Notes
- Technical Specifications
- Software Help Guides
- Test Procedures.
Over the past 15 years, I have helped over 100
clients
to improve their documentation. These include industries
as diverse as financial services and banking; shipping
management; the oil industry; software development;
telecomms; pharmaceutical and medical; higher education
and forensic science; housing management and will
writing, lawn care franchise management, buildings
maintenance systems and so on.
You name it, I can help you write about it! (Within
reason, of course!)
